“My lords, ladies and gentleman,” purrs tonight’s master of ceremonies, “please welcome your hosts for the evening, Uma Thurman and Samuel L Jackson.” On a balcony suspended halfway up a gargantuan stage at London’s Royal Albert Hall, our hosts appear. Samuel wears his trademark Kangol hat, Uma redefines stunning in a see-through dress that has already drawn audible gasps on the red carpet and will, tomorrow, dominate talk on breakfast TV, in the papers, on the radio... everywhere. It’s an event outfit. A diaphanous water-cooler moment, it almost threatens to upstage the night. Almost.
“Good evening,” says Uma, “and welcome to Swarovski Fashion Rocks 2007 for the Prince’s Trust.”
Perhaps thinking of his co-host’s dress; or perhaps with half an eye on the Swarovski crystal-encrusted chandelier that hangs to his right – yet another of tonight’s wonders constantly threatening to arrest the gaze – or maybe because he’s co-hosting the planet’s biggest and best celebration of music and fashion, Samuel simply says: “Wow!”.
And the show opens with the unmistakably opulent brass of the theme from Goldfinger accompanied by the one and only Dame Shirley Bassey – stunning in Marchesa – just the first of the night’s many musical highlights.
And what about those highlights? Swarovski Fashion Rocks has always been about pairing designers with musicians, and this year organisers outdid themselves, with Alicia Keys joined by Armani, Róisín Murphy by Gucci, Lily Allen by Chanel, Razorlight by Burberry, Marc Almond by Yves Saint Laurent, Shy Child by Stella McCartney, The Gossip by Christopher Kane, Joss Stone by Calvin Klein, Timbaland by Dolce & Gabbana, Iggy Pop by Versace and Nicole Scherzinger, of the Pussycat Dolls, by Valentino. They were unique pairings and blistering performances.
Guest presenters included Dame Edna Everage (who cheekily quipped that the models backstage must have been nervous because they kept disappearing into the toilets), Claudia Schiffer and Gwyneth Paltrow, while soul diva Whitney Houston basked in one of the night’s warmest welcomes, making a rare public appearance and speaking on behalf of the Prince’s Trust.
The event marked a homecoming for Swarovski Fashion Rocks, which was returning to the Royal Albert Hall after the previous event in Monaco, 2005. And even before the show began the night seemed to sparkle. Talk on the red carpet was firstly of Uma’s dress, then of another see-through number, this one on Naomi Campbell, who arrived arm-in-arm with the transparent frock’s creators, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana.
Enter Kate Moss, who arrived wearing one of her own designs, a beaded 1920s flapper dress said to be a recreation of the outfit she wore on her first-ever date with Johnny Depp. Dripping with 60,000 Swarovski crystal beads of silver, dove grey and antique green, all hand-beaded by Hand & Lock, it was auctioned on eBay the following day, raising £5,100 for the Prince’s Trust.
All that and surprises, too. Special moments, like the presentation of a lifetime achievement award to Valentino in honour of his contribution to fashion, a performance by Sugababes and Patti LaBelle dedicated to Swarovski and, of course, some classic rock ’n’ roll behaviour. Firstly, Razorlight’s Johnny Borrell earned a ticking off from Uma when he lit up a cigarette on stage – a strict no-no in London these days. Then rock wildman Iggy Pop topped it all, delighting the star-studded audience by mooning them to prove that Fashion Rocks – and it rocks in style – but at the end of day, nothing rocks quite like Pop.
“Signore e signori,” intona il maestro delle cerimonie, “diamo il benvenuto ai presentatori della serata, Uma Thurman e Samuel L Jackson.” Su un balcone sospeso a mezz’aria sopra un palco ciclopico, al Royal Albert Hall di Londra, fanno la loro comparsa i due illustri conduttori. Samuel indossa il suo marchio di fabbrica, il cappello Kangol, Uma esibisce la sua silhouette mozzafiato in un abito dalle trasparenze seducenti che ha già mietuto vittime ai bordi del tappeto rosso e che, domani, sarà l’argomento preferito dei programmi TV del mattino, dei giornali, alla radio... ovunque. Una mise da capogiro che ha quasi rischiato di oscurare l’evento. Quasi.
“Buona sera”, esordisce Uma, “e benvenuti allo Swarovski Fashion Rocks 2007 for The Prince’s Trust.”
Sarà stato il vestito della collega o forse il lampadario tempestato di cristalli Swarovski che pende alla sua destra – un’altra delle meraviglie che rischiano di catalizzare tutti gli sguardi per l’intera serata – o la sua co-conduzione all’evento di musica e moda più importante e imponente del pianeta, fatto sta che Samuel esclama un semplice ed eloquente “Wow!”.
E lo spettacolo inizia con l’inconfondibile opulenza degli ottoni del tema di Goldfinger, accompagnato dalla sola e unica Shirley Bassey – straordinaria per Marchesa –, la prima delle numerose stelle musicali della serata.
Cosa si può dire di tali e tante stelle? Swarovski Fashion Rocks ha sempre caldeggiato e benedetto l’unione di stilisti e musicisti, e quest’anno gli organizzatori si sono superati: Alicia Keys per Armani, Róisín Murphy per Gucci, Lily Allen per Chanel, Razorlight per Burberry, Marc Almond per Yves Saint Laurent, Shy Child per Stella McCartney, The Gossip per Christopher Kane, Joss Stone per Calvin Klein, Timbaland per Dolce & Gabbana, Iggy Pop per Versace e Nicole Scherzinger, delle Pussycat Dolls, per Valentino. Accoppiate vincenti ed esibizioni al cardiopalma.
Tra gli ospiti, Edna Everage (che ha spiritosamente fatto allusione al nervosismo delle modelle nel backstage, visto il loro continuo sparire nelle toilette…), Claudia Schiffer e Gwyneth Paltrow, mentre la diva del soul, Whitney Houston, ha preso la parola a nome dell’ente benefico The Prince’s Trust dopo l’applauso di benvenuto, tra i più calorosi ed entusiasti della serata, con cui la platea ha accolto una delle rare apparizioni in pubblico della cantante.
L’evento ha segnato un ritorno in patria di Swarovski Fashion Rocks, di nuovo al Royal Albert Hall dopo la precedente edizione tenutasi a Monaco nel 2005. Lo spettacolo si è annunciato “brillante” già prima di iniziare. Le prime voci estasiate si sono levate ai bordi del tappeto rosso davanti al nude look di Uma, quindi alla vista di altre provocanti trasparenze, quelle dell’abito di Naomi Campbell, scortata dagli autori di tanto capolavoro, Domenico Dolce e Stefano Gabbana.
È stata poi la volta di Kate Moss in una delle sue creazioni, un vestito anni ’20 con un fiume di perline, a quanto pare una rivisitazione dell’abito indossato al suo primo appuntamento con Johnny Depp. Gocciolante di perle di cristallo Swarovski (60.000!) color argento, grigio tortora e verde antico, tutte infilate a mano da Hand & Lock, l’abito è stato venduto all’asta su eBay il giorno successivo per 5.100 sterline, devolute interamente a The Prince’s Trust.
Le sorprese non sono finite qui. La serata ha visto momenti speciali - la consegna del premio alla carriera a Valentino in omaggio al suo straordinario contributo alla moda e la performance di Sugababes e Patti LaBelle dedicata a Swarovski - accanto ai quali non è mancato qualche classico “eccesso” rock ’n’ roll. Prima, il leader dei Razorlight Johnny Borrell si è meritato una sgridata da Uma accendendo una sigaretta sul palco – un ferreo tabù di questi tempi a Londra -, poi la selvaggia rockstar Iggy Pop le ha superate tutte deliziando il pubblico di VIP con l’esibizione del suo didietro: a dimostrazione che la moda è rock ma che, tutto sommato, niente è più rock del pop!
